The drive to further one’s education is a continuous pursuit that often presents challenges, yet it also fosters resilience and determination. Having earned master’s degrees in both Cybersecurity and Business, I found myself at a crossroads, contemplating the next logical step—pursuing a PhD. My journey to securing funding for this endeavor has been anything but linear, but through it, I have gathered invaluable insights that I hope will assist others in similar positions.
The OAS Scholarship Journey: A Learning Experience
Last year, I applied for the Organization of American States (OAS) Academic Graduate Scholarship Program, an esteemed and highly competitive opportunity. Securing a place on the shortlist for the OAS Academic Scholarship Programme 2024 was a milestone in itself. The selection process is very detailed, with an interview panel comprising representatives from the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Belize Network of NGOs, the University of Belize, and various Government of Belize Ministries. While I was ultimately selected as Belize’s primary pre-selected candidate, the final decision by OAS favored another individual due to my prior scholarship award from the OAS back in 2018.
Though disappointing, this experience reinforced that setbacks are not dead ends but rather redirections. The process allowed me to refine my goals and explore alternative paths to achieve my aspirations.
Key Considerations When Pursuing a PhD
1. Understanding the Costs: Scholarships Are Crucial
A PhD is a significant financial investment. The programs I explored in the United States, particularly from Dakota State University and Colorado Technical University, ranged above $50,000 Belize Dollars. For someone residing in Belize, this cost is substantial. Opting for a scholarship is the most viable approach to avoid incurring substantial debt. However, choosing to study within one’s home country may limit opportunities, as many of the most renowned programs are based abroad.
2. Selecting the Right University and Field of Study
My priority was a PhD program that aligned with my expertise in Cybersecurity while also complementing my business background. Dakota State University was my top choice due to its focus on Cybersecurity research. Colorado Technical University followed closely behind. Additionally, I considered the Instituto Centroamericano de Administración Pública (ICAP) in Costa Rica, which provided a balanced approach to Business Administration.
Through this exploration, I reaffirmed my innate curiosity and passion for continuous learning, regardless of discipline. It is essential to select a program that not only aligns with your professional aspirations but also fuels your intellectual curiosity.
3. Evaluating Feasible Options: Avoiding Predatory Institutions
Realistically, high tuition costs pushed me to seek more financially viable alternatives. While exploring online options, I came across institutions like Atlantic International University, which granted acceptance almost immediately. However, background checks revealed accreditation issues and numerous negative reviews, raising red flags. Similar concerns arose with UNICAF and UNIATHENA. This experience underscored the importance of thoroughly vetting institutions before committing.
Ultimately, I circled back to ICAP in Costa Rica, which offered a reasonable tuition structure of around $11,000 USD with flexible payment plans. They’ve also been in existence for many years, recognized throughout Central America and other countries. This seemed to be the most practical and credible option. The only drawback here is that’s in Spanish. It will be the first time pursuing a degree that’s not in English.
4. Defining Your Ultimate Goal
Beyond the prestige of having “Dr.” before your name, it is essential to define what you truly hope to achieve with a PhD. For me, it is about research, contribution to the field, and personal fulfillment. Higher education is not merely about credentials but about unlocking potential and expanding opportunities.
Criticism is inevitable—people may question your choice of university or the relevance of your degree. However, external opinions should not dictate your journey. What truly matters is aligning your studies with your long-term goals and aspirations. I have been fortunate to seize great opportunities throughout my career, but my hunger for knowledge persists. We only live once, and failing to pursue knowledge means underutilizing our potential.

A New Opportunity: OAS-Iklox Scholarship
On a positive note, persistence pays off. I recently secured a scholarship through the Department of Human Development, Education, and Employment (DHDEE) of the OAS and Structuralia for the OAS-Iklox program. This reaffirms that while one path may close, another can open. Opportunities exist for those who remain dedicated to their goals.
